BUTLER, Augustus (1817-1863) — London

Artist and lithographer. Produced A panoramic view of the Sea of Azof, Kertch, Yenikale, Arabat, &c. shewing the position recently taken by the allies, likewise comprising the whole of the Crimea 1855. Also known for numerous views, military scenes, music covers and title-pages, etc., as well as the illustrations to Victor Hugo, “The hunchback or bell-ringer of Notre Dame” 1840.

Baptised as Augustus Leopold Butler 3 Dec 1817 at West Teignmouth, Devon, the son of Richard and Ann Butler. He married Sarah Pope (b.1818) 8 Nov 1841 at St. Mary the Virgin, Bedfont, Middlesex. Their numerous children – at least seven sons and a daughter – were born in various parts of London, including the parish of St. Bride, Fleet Street, the Liberty of the Rolls, and North Brixton. His death was registered at Holborn and he was buried at Victoria Park Cemetery, Hackney, 4 Sep 1863.
