EAST, William Edmund (1805-1892) — London
Wholesale stationer, printer & lithographer. For work produced by ‘Skipper & East’, see Charles Skipper 1 and Charles Skipper 2.
Born in Chelsea 4 May 1805, and baptised 10 Jul 1805 at St. Martin in the Fields, the son of William East (1767?-1833) and his wife Ann Rippen (1775?-1851), who married at the same church in 1792. Free (Stationers) by redemption (purchase) 3 July 1832. He was a partner in ‘Skipper & East’, with Charles Skipper 1 from at least 1833. He married Frances Marianne Ruck (1816-1905), daughter of a local merchant, 6 Sep 1838 at St. Dunstan in the East, and the couple were living on the premises on St. Dunstan’s Hill with an infant son in 1841. By 1851 there were five children, the household completed by a nurse, a cook, a housemaid, and a nursemaid. The partnership with Skipper was announced as “expired by effluxion of time” and formally dissolved 30 Jun 1858, and East had presumably retired at this time. By 1861 he was living in Herefordshire, later moving to Kent, and then to Gloucestershire. Died at home in Prestbury 2 Feb 1892 and was buried there 5 Feb 1892 at the age of eighty-six. Probate was granted on effects of £24,805,13s.1d on 3 Mar 1892. A memorial tablet in honour of East and his wife was installed in Prestbury parish church in 1907.
