John Dumphy

DUMPHY, John (1812-1877) — Madras

Lithographer. Produced, as “Dumphy & Sinclair”, J. Sinclair, India and countries adjacent : to accompany Symond’s introduction to the geography of India 1847. Also known for the plates for Simon Fonceca, “Sketches in India chiefly from nature”, 1852-1853, botanical plates, views, etc.
Born 15 Mar 1812 and baptised 26 Jul 1812 at Seringapatam, the son of John and Mary Dumphy. In 1840, Dumphy was a draftsman and writer at the Government Lithographic Press in Madras. He married Wilhelmina Heefke (1823-1912), with whom he had several sons, at Madras 28 Apr 1842. He seems subsequently to have been associated with the Fort St. George Press. He died at Purasawalkam 18 Dec 1877 and was buried the following day.
