MOFFAT, William (fl.1851-1892) — Edinburgh & New York
Map engraver. Recorded as an engraver in his teens on the 1851 census, but specifically as a map engraver in 1861.
Born in Edinburgh 11 Jul 1838 and baptised 28 July 1838, the son of William Moffat (1806?-1894), a joiner, and his wife Elizabeth Rennie Morton (1805-1877), who had married in 1829. He had emigrated to New York by 1867 and was recorded as an engraver there, in 1880 resident with his wife Lydia Jane Harrison (1838-1898) from Nova Scotia and two children born in New York. He disappears from directories after 1889 and is last securely identified advertising “Engraver wishes a situation; willing to go out of town” (New York Herald, Jan 14 1892). It seems probable that he died around that time.
