Thomas Robert Mander

MANDER, Thomas Robert (1818-1891) — Southampton

Ordnance Survey engraver.

Born in London 27 Mar 1818 and baptised at St. George Bloomsbury 19 Apr 1818, the son of Thomas Mander (1787-1853), a cabinet-maker, and his wife Ann Bowerman (1798-1867), who had married in 1815. Recorded in London, working as an engraver, in 1841. He married (1) Caroline Amelia Shew (1822-1881) in 1843 — the couple were living in Hatton Garden when Mander was a witness at an Old Bailey assault case later that year. By 1851 he was working for the Ordnance Survey in Southampton, resident with his wife and children. He remained with the Survey throughout his subsequent career. He married (2) Caroline Bott (1839-1917) at St. John the Baptist, Kentish Town, 10 Apr 1886. He died 24 Jun 1891, his death registered in Fulham.
