John Hoole

HOOLE, John (1699 -1734) — London

Bookseller, print & map-seller. In partnership with Henry Overton (see BME 2011) from 1723 to 1734. A number of publications are listed under Overton.

Born in Yorkshire and baptised 16 Nov 1699 at St. Peter, Sheffield, the son of Robert Hoole, gentleman. His older brother Samuel Hoole (1693-1758) was apprenticed (Broderers) to Henry Overton (see BME 2011) in 1710, and Hoole followed a similar path, becoming apprenticed to Overton in 1714 for a premium of £20. 17s. 6d. Free (Broderers) Jul 1721. In partnership with Overton from 1723. He died 25 Dec 1734 “of a pleuretick fever, after four days illness”. His will, (PROB 11/668/4010) proved 30 Dec 1734, makes no mention of either wife or children, but appoints Samuel Hoole his executor and leaves bequests of between £20 and £100 to four sisters, and of £50 to each of his “very good friends and dear companions” Edward Holloway and Joseph Phillips, etc.
