WELLAND, James Augustus (1840-1898) — London
Map engraver.
Born in St. Pancras in 1840, the eldest son of James Welland (see BME 2011) and his wife Jane Elizabeth Howell (1820-1860) who had married the previous year. In 1861, Welland and his younger brothers Arthur Welland (1842-1929) and Ralph Welland (1847-1930) were all employed as apprentices to their father. Married (1) Kate Maria Kent (1844?-1880) at Islington in 1865. Recorded as a map and chart engraver in 1871, resident with his first wife and two small children. He married (2) Emma Eldridge, née Maskell, (1845?-1927) at All Hallows, Tottenham, 5 May 1890. By the time of his death he had become the licensee of the Hornsey Rise in north London. He died 31 Jul 1898 was buried at Camden 2 Aug 1898. Probate was granted 18 Aug 1898 on effects of £272.5s.
