ARCHIBALD, George (1812?-1891) — Edinburgh & Southampton
Map engraver.
Born in Midlothian about 1812, the son of William Archibald and his wife Helen Morison, who married at Inveresk in 1807. Recorded as an engraver & printer in Edinburgh in 1841, resident with a brother, Robert Archibald, also an engraver & printer. Married (1) Marion Laing (1814-1868) at St. Cuthbert, Edinburgh, 20 Apr 1842. Working for the Ordnance Survey in Southampton in 1851, resident with his wife and four children, all born in Scotland. He had returned to Scotland, now with six children, by 1861. His son James (1856-1917) was already working as an engraver in 1871 at the age of fourteen. He married (2) Lydia Lalng (1823-1877), “third surviving daughter of the late William gunmaker”, his first wife’s younger sister, in Edinburgh, 16 Dec 1873 (Edinburgh Evening News, 17 Dec 1873). He had retired before his death at the age of seventy-nine on 18 Oct 1891. He was buried at Warriston Cemetery, where his second wife was also buried, 21 Oct 1891.
