Charles William Mitchell

MITCHELL, Charles William (1803-1868) — London

Globemaker. Routinely recorded as a globemaker on census returns and other documents throughout his adult life. He was presumably employed by one of the major London globemaking businesses.

Born 18 Dec 1803 in Shoe Lane, City of London, the son of John and Elizabeth Mitchell. Baptised 20 May 1804 at St. Clement Danes. He married Esther Crutwell (1803-1882) 8 Dec 1824 at St. George the Martyr, Southwark. Resident in Richmond Street, Lambeth, in 1841 with his wife and five children. In 1851, one of the children — Henry Hurst Mitchell (1835-1898) — was employed as a “color maker”. He died 8 Aug 1868 at Hayes, Kent. Probate on effects of under £600 was granted to his widow 28 Apr 1876.
