Joseph Lee

LEE, Joseph (fl.1805-1816) — London

Engraver. Engraved Plan of Carlisle Cathedral 1815 and other plans for Samuel Lysons, “Magna Britannia : being a concise topographical account of the several counties of Great Britain” 1806-1822.

Successor to John Lee (see BME 2011). Succeeded by Rebecca Lee in an 1814 directory and subsequently by the better-known James Lee, with whom there is evident confusion, as indeed there is over the whole of this important family of engravers. Quite possibly to be identified with Joseph Lee (1780-1859), who later in life became famous as an enamel painter, born at Islington 16 Jan 1780, the son of John Lee of Islington, London, and his wife, Rachel, née Oldroyd. This Joseph Lee died at Gravesend 26 Dec 1859, aged seventy-nine.
