John Thomas Green

GREEN, John Thomas (1839-1903) — Southampton

Map engraver and print colourist for the Ordnance Survey.

Born 13 Feb 1839 and baptised 17 Sep 1839 at St. Martin in the Fields, London, the son of William Green 2 and his wife Matilda Thomas, who had married in 1836. The family had moved to Southampton by 1851. Employed by the Survey as an outline and lettering engraver from 1857, earning 3s. 9d per day in 1863. Married Amelia Caplen (1838-1922), with whom he had several children, in Southampton in the latter part of 1861. He had retired by 1891 and died in June 1903. His son Walter Edwin Green (1869-1947) became a draughtsman for the Ordnance Survey.
