Henry Baker

BAKER, Henry (1838-1924) — Southampton

Ordnance Survey engraver. Engraved the outlines for Arran 1870, the lettering by John Darling.

A third-generation Ordnance Survey engraver, the grandson of Benjamin Baker (see BME 2011). Born in Islington in 1838, the son of George Baker (see BME 2011) and his wife Eliza Rawlings, who had married in 1828. Living with his family in Southampton by 1851. He joined the Ordnance Survey in February 1857 and in 1863 was earning five shillings a day as a writing and outline engraver. He married Lydia Hillier (1836-1902), the daughter of a Southampton carpenter, in 1863. At one point Superintendent of Engraving at the Survey, he had retired by 1901. He was living alone as a widower with two servants in 1911. Died 18 Feb 1924. Probate on effects of £6,651.14s.8d was granted to his son George Henry Baker 5 Apr 1924.
