
PEEL, John (1791-1859) — Liverpool & Preston
Engraver & copperplate printer. Engraved the city arms and probably all of A plan of Liverpool with part of the environs 1819, published by John Gore (an earlier 1817 version of the plan bears the almost wholly erased name of another engraver). Engraved two of the maps included in Thomas Evans, To the worshipful the mayor … of Liverpool an entire new and correct chart … of Liverpool & Chester rivers with a continuation of the coast … to Holyhead 1829, the other was by Thomas Smith 3 (see BME 2011).
Born 5 Feb 1791 in Preston and baptised 27 Mar 1791 at St. John Preston the son of William Peel (1769-1812) and his wife Elizabeth Heartly (Hartley). Married Ellen Garner (1790-1865), with whom he had a number of children, at St. Anne, Cazneau Street, Liverpool, 17 Jan 1813. Traded as ‘Peel & Co.’ 1816-1818. A partnership with Henry Billinge, son of Thomas Billinge (see BME 2011) was formally dissolved 1 Jul 1817. He was declared bankrupt 11 Nov 1820, the reports noting the partnership with Henry Billinge. He had returned to his native Preston by 1823 and died there 12 Apr 1859. Buried at Preston 15 Apr 1859, aged sixty-eight. Peel’s sons John (b.1820?) and Henry (1826-1854) were also engravers, but his widow died in the workhouse.
