William Green 2

GREEN, William 2 (1814?-1873) — Southampton

Engraver. Worked as a writing engraver on the Kent sheets of the Ordnance Survey 1862-1872.
Born in Clerkenwell in or about 1814. He married Matilda Thomas (1809?-1890) at St. Pancras 31 Jul 1836. After working in London, Green joined the Ordnance Survey and was resident in South Stoneham with Matilda and six children in 1851. He died at his home 8 Mar 1873 — “On the 8th inst., at 6, Lower Lyons-street, Newtown, Southampton, Mr. William Green, engraver, of the Ordnance Survey, after a long illness, much respected by all with whom he was connected, aged 58”. Probate on his effects of under £200 was granted to his widow 17 Apr 1873. His son John Thomas Green is separately noticed, while his daughter Emily (1842?-1906) married another OS engraver in Cornelius Walter Caplen (1843-1908) and was mother to another in Cornelius John Caplen (1868-1925).
