James Gilkerson

GILKERSON, James (1751?-1832) — London

Mathematical instrument-maker, optician and globemaker. Webster reports a globe of 1806 produced in partnership with William Gilbert.  A twelve-inch globe produced by ‘James Gilkerson & Co.’ and dated 1818 is also recorded.

In partnership with William Gilbert as ‘Gilbert & Gilkerson’ 1793-1809, he then traded as ‘James Gilkerson & Co.’ to 1825, and thereafter with John McCall as ‘Gilkerson & McCall’. Gilkerson retired to Woodford in about 1830. He died in 1832 and was buried at St. Botolph Aldgate 4 Jan 1833, recorded as being eighty-two years of age. John McCall continued the business under his own name from about 1830.
