William Dollond Harris

HARRIS, William Dollond (1818-1861) — London

Optician and globemaker; wholesale stationer.

Born 19 Feb 1818, the son of William Harris (see BME 2011) and his wife Charlotte. Baptised 13 May 1818 at St. George Bloomsbury. Succeeded to his father’s business, but by 1851 had become a wholesaler of fancy stationery, employing four hands, and later a steel pen and percussion cap maker. Free (Spectaclemakers) by patrimony 1852. He married Betsy Sophia Henesy (b.1830?), daughter of a timber merchant, at St. George Bloomsbury 4 Dec 1852. He died 11 Jan 1861 at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital after a long illness and was buried at Highgate 15 Jan 1861 aged forty-two. Probate on effects of under £200 was granted to his widow 4 May 1861. His widow later petitioned the Spectaclemakers for charity.
