John Marshall 3

MARSHALL, John 3 (1836-1890) — Southampton

Ordnance Survey engraver.

Born in Dublin, reportedly in Stanhope Street on 30 May 1836, the son of John Marshall 2 (see BME 2011) and his first wife Mary Ann Hayes. His younger brother Matthew Marshall (1844?-1901) also became an engraver for the Survey. He joined the Survey in Nov 1850, originally apprenticed as a compositor, but by 1851 had become an engraver, recorded as an apprentice when living with his family in Southampton on the census. In 1863 he was earning seven shillings a day as an outline and writing engraver. He married Emma Lisle  (1838-1924), with whom he had at least ten children, in 1860. Their sons Frederick (b.1867) and George Marshall (1869-1938) were also later employed by the Survey. He died 25 Feb 1890. Probate on a personal estate of £197.13s. was granted to his widow 22 Mar 1890. “Mr. Marshall for over thirty years was an engraver at the Ordnance Survey Office, but retired about six years ago owing to failing eyesight. He was one of those who joined the 2nd Hants Volunteer Corps at its formation, and he remained a member of it for twenty-five years. On. his retirement, about five years ago, as colour-sergeant of No. 3 Company, he was presented with an illuminated address, together with a purse gold in recognition of his services. In his earlier years Mr. Marshall was good amateur oarsman and formed one of a four-oared crew which gained successes not only at Southampton but also at Brighton and other places on the coast, and notably in the four-oared galley Excelsior, manned by deceased, Messrs. C. Webster, [James] Slight (see BME 2011), and J. Beaton (since deceased), and which hailed from the West Quay Amateur Regatta Club, of which the crew were members. He was greatly esteemed and respected, and much sympathy is felt for his widow and family in their bereavement. The funeral takes place at the Cemetery this (Saturday) afternoon” (Hampshire Advertiser, 1 Mar 1890).
