Robert Rollo

ROLLO, Robert (1828?-1870) — Southampton

Ordnance Survey engraver. Executed the lettering on some of the OS six-inch county surveys 1859-1867.

Said to have been born in Edinburgh about 1828, although possibly the Robert Rollo born in that city 14 Mar 1825, the son of Robert Rollo, a bootmaker, and his wife Christian Mackintosh, who had married in 1824. Joined the Ordnance Survey in Aug 1849. Married the London-born Eleanor (Ellen) Rebecca Miles (1827-1915), with whom he had a number of children, at Southampton 20 Nov 1850. He was being paid nine shillings a day in 1863. He died 28 Apr 1870 — “Among the list of deaths in to-day’s paper we record the name of Mr. Robert Rollo, a native of Edinburgh, who had been employed in the engraving department of the Ordnance Survey for the last twenty years. No man in that department stood higher in the esteem of his brother employés. They would have gladly wished to have shown their respect for him by attending his remains to its last resting-place but for the wish of his relatives, who requested it to be entirely private” (Hampshire Independent, 5 May 1870). By 1871 his son Robert James Rollo (1855-1877) was already employed as an engraver by the OS.
