William James Tuttle

TUTTLE, William James (1840-1911) — London

Map engraver.

Born in St. Pancras in the latter part of 1840, the son of James Tuttle above and his wife Elizabeth Agnes Knight (1814-1866), who married in 1836. Presumably trained by his father, he was working as a map engraver from at least 1861, as was his younger brother John Edward Tuttle (1845-1913). He married Elizabeth Caroline Scott (1844-1926), daughter of James Montague Scott (1812-1885), a print-seller, at St. Pancras Old Church 16 Oct 1864. He was living in Lambeth by 1871, with his wife and two children. Recorded as a geographical engraver in 1881, by which time there were five children — the couple had eight in all, four of whom were still living in 1911. By 1891, his own son, William Edward Tuttle (1872-1955), was also working as a geographical engraver, later moving to Southampton to engrave for the Ordnance Survey. William James Tuttle had retired by 1911 and died in the latter part of that year.
