Born 13 Sep 1809 at Pulloxhill, Bedfordshire, the son of Ambrose Whitfield and his wife Mary Field. Married Mary Ann Proctor (1801?-1875) from Cambridge at St. George Hanover Square 2 Dec 1832. He was living at the business premises at 142 Oxford Street to at least 1871, in 1861 with his wife, his son William Henry (1835?-1921), who was also engaged in the business, a daughter-in-law, a grand-daughter, and a servant; he was employing a man and a boy. His business went into liquidation in Apr 1877, a meeting of creditors called for 3 May 1877. He moved to Charlotte Street about this time and retired not long after, although an imprint of about 1881 is known from his son’s home in Sheerness. He died a widower 7 Mar 1888, “much respected by a very large circle of friends” (Sheerness Guardian, 10 Mar 1888) at Burgoyne Cottage, Strode Crescent, Sheerness, the home of his son, who had now become a Congregational minister. Probate on a personal estate of £174.7s.6d was granted to his son 19 Mar 1888.
