CHARRON, William (1736-1816) — London
Artist, engraver and enameller. Engraved J. Leroux, Plan of the Escurial, for Francisco de Los Santos, ‘A description of the royal palace, and monastery of St. Laurence, called the Escurial’ 1760, translated by George Thompson and published by Samuel Hooper. Known principally as a watch-case engraver. Published ‘A description of the freedom box, voted by the City of London, to the Hon. Augustus Keppel, Admiral of the Blue. To which is prefixed A succinct account of his public services’ 1779.
Born 30 Apr 1736, the son of an engraver named John Charron (Jean Charon) (b.1701) of Little Chapel Street, Soho (master of the well-known Peter Paul Benazech in 1742), and his wife (Marie) Anne de Tandebarat (1696-1742), who had married in 1728. Baptised William James Charron at St. Anne Soho 15 May 1736. He married Susannah Barnard (1741?-1826) at Sible Hedingham, Essex, 15 Sep 1767. He was buried under his full name at St. Anne Soho 10 Sep 1816 aged eighty.
