MILLAR, George (fl.1846-1852) — Edinburgh
Engraver, copperplate and lithographic printer. Produced Edinburgh, Leith and Granton Railway: plan of ground near Canonmills proposed to be purchased 1846; T. Carfrae, Plan of part of the estate of Kerse as intersected by the Alloa branch of the Scottish Central Railway 1847, etc. Also known for at least one bookplate.
Born in Midlothian about 1826, the 1841 census records him as an apprentice engraver of fifteen, resident with his mother Rachel (b.1791?) and servant. He married Ann Anderson (b.1824?), apparently the girl next door, 10 Oct 1848, and a son was born the following year. His property was sequestrated for debt 10 Jul 1850, but a dividend paid the following year and proceedings apparently concluded in 1852. Another son was born in 1853, but his wife had become a widow by 1861 and he is taken to be the George Millar who died 18 Dec 1855 and was buried at Warriston Cemetery 21 Dec 1855, age and occupation not recorded.
