Soldier and artist. Produced ‘Select views of the rock and fortress of Gibraltar’ 1846, with two plans. Also produced ‘Views in the island of Barbados’ 1835, lithographed by ‘Day & Haghe’ (see BME 2011).

Born at Tamil Nadu, Madras, India in 1812. Baptised 22 Jan 1816 at Cannanore, Madras, the son of Colonel John Carter (1782-1845) and his wife Carolina Amelia Rudolfina von Albedyhll (1791-1862), who had married at Cochin in 1809. Created an ensign in the First Regiment of Foot 18 May 1832, promoted to lieutenant by purchase 7 Aug 1835. Married the Hon. Jane Ferguson Murray (1816-1904), sister to Lord Elibank, 5 Feb 1839 at St. George’s Chapel, Edinburgh. Promoted to captain by purchase 18 Sep 1839. Exhibited a view of Gibraltar at the Royal Academy in 1842 and four still-lifes in 1847. Became an adjutant in the First Royal Regiment from 19 Jan 1846. Exhibited an interior of Tintern Abbey at the Royal Society of British Artists 1848. Recorded as a half-pay captain in the army in Edinburgh in 1851. Subsequently promoted to major in 1851 and lieutenant-colonel in 1858. As Captain Unattached and Adjutant of the Royal Monmouthshire Militia, he was granted a patent 26 Mar 1860 for the invention of “improvements in knapsacks and pouches for the use of soldiers and others”, receiving similar patents for “improvements in boots or other coverings for the feet” (1861), “improvements in harness and the shafts of carriages” (1862), and “improvements in shirts and other like garments” (1866). Retired from the army in 1861 with a final rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was living in Kensington with a daughter in 1871-1881, recorded as a Lieutenant-Colonel on the retired list. Listed as holding directorships in the ‘South Fowey Consols Copper Mine’ and the ‘Halvinna, Fox Tor, and Redhill Tin Mining Company’ in 1872, adding the ‘Hilton-on-Sea and Wexford Co. Ltd.’ in 1873. An adjudication against Carter was made in the Bankruptcy Court 9 Apr 1877: this was soon rescinded, but a second bankruptcy petition was granted in Dec 1886. A lease relating to the Redcliffe Road house and papers relating to legal actions in NA. Died at Chiswick 28 Nov 1888 and was buried there 3 Dec 1888, aged seventy-six. He was survived by two sons and four daughters. A number of Carter’s watercolours of Gibraltar appeared at auction in 1986, and were written up in full in The Field 28 Aug 1986.
