William Bird George Mitchell

MITCHELL, William Bird George (1792-1863) — London

Globemaker.

Born in Bermondsey 28 Jul 1792 and baptised 26 Aug 1782 at St. Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, the son of William Mitchell, a hatter of Long Lane, and his wife Ann. He married Mary Ann Wood (b.1798?) at Christ Church, Southwark, 14 Apr 1816. Recorded as a globemaker at the baptisms of several children, and specifically as a “globe maker (to trade)” on the 1851 census, resident in Brook’s Row with his wife, working as a laundress, and two sons — William John Mitchell below, then a journeyman globemaker, and George Mitchell above, here recorded as a watch-gilder’s apprentice aged eighteen, but also to become a globemaker. William Bird George Mitchell died in St. Pancras Workhouse 11 Aug 1863 and was buried at Finchley 18 Aug 1863.
