SWANSTON, Andrew Heriot (1835-1894) — Southampton
Map engraver. Ordnance Survey engraver.
Born in Edinburgh and baptised 19 Aug 1835 at St. Cuthbert, the son of George Heriot Swanston (see BME 2011) and his wife Margaret Burgess. Recorded as an apprentice engraver in 1851, living with his family in Edinburgh. He joined the Ordnance Survey 5 Oct 1857. He married Ellen Kelly (1839?-1885) at Castleknock, Dublin, 26 Dec 1859 and was presumably working there for the Ordnance Survey until at least 1861, when a daughter was born in Dublin. He had moved to Southampton by 1863, earning five shillings a day as an outline and writing engraver for the Survey. He signed a petition concerning the Hartley Institution in that year. He was resident with his wife and five children in 1871, the youngest all born in Southampton. There were three more children by 1881. He had become a widower by 1891, by which time three of his sons had clerical positions with the Survey. He died at home 1 May 1894. Probate on effects of £464.12s.10d was granted 15 May 1894.
