Gustave Phillip de Garlieb

DE GARLIEB, Gustave Phillip (1825?-1901) — Southampton

Ordnance Survey engraver.

Born in Denmark in or about 1825. He was named as a travelling companion of Daniel John Pound (see BME 2011) in 1852, and married the German-born Aurelia Colestina Hedwig Langhammer at Chelsea in 1853. The couple were still living in Chelsea at the birth of two daughters in 1854 and 1855. De Garlieb was an accomplished tenor singer, much in demand and much praised in the press for appearances at local concerts. He also served as a Colour Sergeant in the Second Hants Rifles Volunteers. He died 2 Jun 1901. Administration of his estate was granted to his widow Aurelia — his effects stated at £247.2s.2d.
