POWELL, Thomas (1796-1857) — Birmingham
Engraver, letterpress and copperplate printer, stationer, type-cutter. Produced J. W. Gibbs, Map of Ledbury and environs, with accompanying notes for “’Hints of Ledbury” 1831.
Thomas Powell was baptised at St. Philip, Birmingham, 28 Mar 1796 — the son of John and Harriet Powell. He married Mary Ann Phillips (1797-1866) 6 Sep 1820 and he and his wife baptised six children at St. Philip 1821-1828. He traded as “Read & Powell” 1817-1823, with William Read, and as “Powell & Wakeman”, with James Wakeman 1835-1839. His partnership with Wakeman was dissolved in 1839 and Powell changed career. By 1841 had become a miller and corn-dealer at Aston. He was appointed overseer for the parish in 1843, but went bankrupt in 1848, paying a dividend of 1s.3d in the pound in 1850. He was buried 10 Oct 1857 at St. Peter & St. Paul, Aston.
